Air curtain

· An air curtain is a fan-powered device that creates an invisible air barrier over the doorway to separate efficiently two different environments, without limiting the access of the people or vehicles.

· The most common use is a downward-facing blower fan mounted over an entrance to a building, or an opening between two spaces conditioned at different temperatures.

Many retailers employ an open-door trading policy as it allows unimpeded accessibility for their customers.  Adopting this policy brings its own issues as cold drafts are likely to enter the building, increasing energy costs. The installation of an air curtain ensures a clean environment and protection against cold drafts entering and warm air leaving the building, therefore saving on energy costs.

Air Curtains allow the doors to remain open for longer, inviting patrons in off the street, they also allow for much of the conditioned air inside the building not to escape outside. At times, both an air curtain and physical door are often utilized in tandem; when the solid door is opened the air curtain turns on, minimizing air exchange between inside and outside.

Air curtains provide an unseen barrier, without deflecting from the design of the building, providing an unobtrusive barrier against outside elements. For cold rooms and freezers air curtains are the safest way to protect the energy losses without any physical barrier that can create accidents or collisions on the doorway. For example, when plastic strip curtains are used the view across the doorway is limited and people or vehicles accidents occur, with compensation consequences. Some installations with strong wind conditions may compromise the air curtain due to: Severe wind, extreme temperature difference indoor/outdoor, more than one door, different levels, big halls, high pressure difference, etc. In those situations a higher performance model is recommended.

HRV AND ERV

A Heat Recovery Ventilator is a controlled ventilation system that reduces high humidity, pollutants and odours in the home by replacing stale air with fresh warm air. 


It works by capturing and recycling the heat contained in polluted exhaust air, using the heat to warm incoming fresh air. This results in humidity being reduced when air is warmed, and so warm air can absorb moisture. This means that incoming cold, outdoor air is “dehumidified” when it is warmed by the recycled heat.

Energy recovery ventilation (ERV) is the energy recovery process of exchanging the energy contained in normally exhausted building or space air and using it to treat (precondition) the incoming outdoor ventilation air in residential and commercial HVAC systems. During the warmer seasons, the system pre-cools and dehumidifies while humidifying and pre-heating in the cooler seasons. The benefit of using energy recovery is the ability to meet the ASHRAE ventilation & energy standards, while improving indoor air quality and reducing total HVAC equipment capacity.

In a word, Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) allows fresh air into a building, while retaining pre-conditioned heating or cooling.

Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) is the proper choice in colder climates where there is excess humidity during the heating season, since it can eliminate it.

The HRV keeps the home supplied with a steady flow of fresh outdoor air. As stale, warm air is expelled, the heat recovery core warms the incoming fresh, colder air before it is distributed throughout the home.

Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) is suitable for colder climates, in homes where there is no humidity excess during the heating season, as well as for warmer climates homes with high outdoor humidity.

The ERV recovers heat (like the HRV); however, it also recuperates the energy trapped in humidity, which greatly improves the overall recovery efficiency.

In conditioned homes, when it is more humid outside than inside, the ERV limits the amount of humidity coming into your home.
